Getting to your locker

In secondary school, you will probably be given a locker for your books and bag. This means you don’t have to carry ALL of your books from home to school and back every day! Lockers can be very helpful, but sometimes you might need some help to keep your locker organised.

Help! I can’t find my books quickly before class!!

Locker a mess? Can’t find what you need? Mouldy sandwiches cover the floor and you lost your pet hamster in there last week? Don’t panic – there are a few simple things you can do to help keep that locker organised! Print AllPlay Learn’s locker checklist which has handy tips on the best way to organise your things. You could make time before or after school each day to check that your locker is organised. It might also help to make sure you get your books ready first thing when you arrive at school, or at the start a break, or go to your locker with plenty of time before the bell for class.

Help! It’s too noisy or crowded around my locker!!

Locker areas can be very busy areas. There might be a lot of noise, or lots of deodorant being sprayed, and lots of other students. If this is something that worries or upsets you, you can ask your school for help. You could ask for an end locker (where it might be quieter) or ask if there is an area where there are fewer lockers together. You could wear noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs. You could ask if you can leave class a few minutes early each time so that you can use your locker when it is quieter. Or you can ask your teacher for other ideas that might help!

Help! I have trouble getting into my locker!!

If your locker is too high or low for you, or if there are lots of students in the area that make accessing your locker difficult (e.g. if you use a wheelchair or mobility device, or are blind or low vision), you can ask your school for help. You can ask for a locker that is a better height for you, or you could ask for an end locker or an area where there are fewer lockers together. You could ask if you can leave class a few minutes early each time so that you can use your locker when it is quieter. Or you can ask your teacher for other ideas that might help!

Help! I have trouble getting to and from my locker quickly!!

If getting to and from lockers quickly is no easy feat for you, there are ways your school can help. You could ask if you can leave class a few minutes early each time to give you more time to access your locker. You can ask your school to select a locker near where most of your classes are held (and to try to schedule most of your classes for a similar area). You can also ask a friend to help with carrying books to your locker.
